Military Borrowers Have Significant Advantages
Military service members, veterans, and their families often have access to lending options that significantly outperform what's available to civilian borrowers. Navy Federal Credit Union, PenFed Credit Union, and USAA (insurance) all exist specifically to serve the military community — and their rates reflect the financial discipline and relatively low default rates of military members.

Special Considerations for Active Duty
- PCS moves: Lenders understand Permanent Change of Station moves create short residency history. Navy Federal and PenFed underwriters know this and don't penalise it.
- Deployment gaps: Missed or late payments during deployment can often be addressed by explaining your deployment status. Navy Federal has specific deployment assistance programs.
- BAS and BAH as income: Basic Allowance for Subsistence and Basic Allowance for Housing can be counted as income for loan qualification purposes — make sure you include them on your application.
- Car insurance on deployment: You may be able to suspend some auto insurance coverages (not all) during deployment to save money. Confirm this with your lender first — most require minimum coverage for the loan term.

VA Loans for Cars? (It Doesn't Exist)
There is no VA-backed auto loan program. The VA provides home loan guarantees but not auto loan guarantees. Military auto financing comes through credit unions (Navy Federal, PenFed) and banks — not through a federal program. Beware of any marketing suggesting otherwise.
SCRA and MLA Protections
Two federal laws specifically protect military borrowers:
- SCRA (Servicemembers Civil Relief Act): Caps interest on pre-service debts at 6% during active duty. Also prevents repossession without a court order while on active duty.
- MLA (Military Lending Act): Caps the Military APR (which includes all fees) at 36% for consumer credit extended to active duty members and covered dependents. Provides additional disclosure requirements.
